Biopesticides are derived from natural materials such as microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, viruses), plant extracts, minerals, and naturally occurring compounds.



Unlike many synthetic pesticides, they are designed to target specific pests while minimizing harm to beneficial insects, wildlife, and the surrounding ecosystem. They have been used in agriculture for decades, but recent advancements in biotechnology, organic farming, and integrated pest management (IPM) have accelerated their adoption. Today, biopesticides are widely applied in fruits, vegetables, cereals, pulses, horticultural crops, and greenhouse farming, helping growers balance productivity with sustainability.

Biopesticides can be broadly classified into Microbial Biopesticides (containing beneficial microorganisms), Botanical Biopesticides (derived from plants such as neem), Biochemical Biopesticides (natural substances that influence pest behavior), and Plant-Incorporated Protectants (PIPs) (plants engineered to produce pest-resistant proteins). Their growing popularity is driven by increasing consumer preference for residue-free food, stricter environmental regulations, and the need to combat pesticide resistance. However, challenges such as shorter shelf life, slower action compared to chemical pesticides, varying field performance, and higher awareness requirements still influence widespread adoption.
